Wairarapa

http://iantraffordphotos.com/What’s it like?

Located in the southeast of New Zealand’s North Island, Wairarapa is very close to Wellington, the bustling capital city and its international airport.  The Tararua Mountains border the region to the west, and to the east the unruly Pacific Ocean adds to the remoteness that visitors can experience.

The Wairarapa coast stretches from Palliser Bay in the south to Akitio in the north, providing numerous opportunities to feel at one with nature.  This coastal wilderness has claimed many ships and it’s easy to see why.

With just about every need for the outdoors enthusiast taken care of from the mountains to the sea, Wairarapa is a real playground for those looki
ng to live life on the wild side.

Things to do in the Wairarapa region

The typical Wairarapa experience is about experiencing the wild side of New Zealand, but the region still offers up some of the more refined experiences such as relaxing at a luxury lodge, wine tasting or some retail therapy.

Two welcoming beach towns, mountain to sea views, lighthouses and a breeding seal colony make this a great place to enjoy some of New Zealand’s best surfing action and superb fishing.

Garden visits and tours are a popular attraction for visitors to the

Wairarapa region.  The variety of gardens available for viewing with some offering afternoon tea provides a great setting for group outings.  The best time to come and enjoy the Wa
irarapa gardens is any time from September through to April.

Visitors to the Wairarapa region can expect to find access to a large number of outdoors opportunities.  From diving deep with the local seals to floating high above the landscape in a hot air balloon, Wairarapa has an abundance of fantastic opportunities on its doorstep.
